Downtown Wooster
Downtown redevelopment began in 1985 with the restoration of the Walnut Street School as a cultural arts center. The Wayne Center for the Arts was given to the community by the Rubbermaid Foundation.
In 1990 a $2.8 million street/infrastructure revitalization plan was developed. Construction began in 1992 and was completed in early 1994.
Since 1987 more than $20 million of private and public monies has been expended in Downtown Wooster. These monies have come from the City of Wooster, Wayne County and private business and property owners.
Prior to 1989, retail storefronts experienced a 40% vacancy rate. The current retail vacancy rate is less than 10%.
In 1994, more than 470,000 people visited the Everything Rubbermaid Store, 85% of those people were from outside of Wayne County.
